A teacher took down a gunman inside an Illinois high school after he opened fire in the school’s cafeteria on Wednesday. Police say Angela McQueen’s quick response saved lives. A 16-year-old student was shot and later released from the hospital, and the suspect, who the police said was a student, is in custody.
The shooter, whose identity was being withheld since he is a minor, acted alone at Mattoon High School. As students there return for classes Thursday morning, they’ll find their belongings exactly how they left them as they dropped everything when shots rang out, reports CBS News’ Tony Dokoupil.
More than 100 police officers raced toward the chaos at Mattoon High School just after 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Students and faculty running for safety reported a shooter in the school’s cafeteria.
“It was one of the scariest things that could happen,” said Braeton Davis, one of the students in the cafeteria when another student opened fire. His knuckles were grazed in the shooting.
“That’s when I looked left, and I saw the person holding the gun, and then they fired three to five more shots,” Davis said.

An 18-year-old migrant from Afghanistan has been arrested in the Austrian capital of Vienna after police alleged he stabbed his own 14-year-old sister to death in an apparent honour killing.
The 18-year-old is said to have killed his sister on Monday after getting into a heated argument with her because she had complained to her parents about not wanting to go to school.
The young Afghan claimed he had “exploded” after his sister had shouted at their parents and physically pushed him, Kronen Zeitung reports.
Office for Youth and Family spokesman Petra Mandl disagreed with the assessment saying that schooling was very important to the girl and she had wanted to leave the household and live elsewhere. Mandl claimed the girl was under stress from her family who enforced traditional values in the household and say the girl visited a crisis centre to talk about it before she was killed.

Tucker Carlson spoke with Amanda Yates Garcia, the “Oracle of Los Angeles,” who participates in a monthly sorcery session to cast a “binding” spell on President Trump.
Garcia said the spell is not intended to hurt the president, but instead to prevent him from hurting others.
“Binding spells are symbolic actions used to harness the powers of the imagination and achieve an intangible result,” she said.
“I desire that Trump stop harming people that I care about and instituting policies that also harm me,” she said.
Garcia said she and other witches are concerned about a possible “nuclear extravaganza” with North Korea, and said Trump is being “mean” to her immigrant neighbors.
Carlson asked if such actions were legal, and Garcia said her actions are no less “symbolic” than standing for the “Star-Spangled Banner” or saluting the flag.
Garcia said she hopes her spells will help “galvanize” a resistance toward Trump’s perceptively dangerous policies.
“Most people just go ahead and vote or buy a t-shirt,” Carlson said.

One of the biggest critics of the after-school Satanist clubs that have been promoted to schools around the country says a club in Tacoma, Washington, was a dismal flop, attracting the interest of only one person, and has been shut down. “Atheists masquerading as a so-called Satanist Temple group” ended an after-school program at Point Defiance Elementary […]

Attacks on religious liberty have jumped by 133 percent in the last five years, according to a new report by the First Liberty Institute.
The First Liberty Institute, a conservative legal group, said in its annual report, “Undeniable: The Survey of Hostility to Religion in America,” that in the last year, there has been a 15 percent increase in attacks on religious liberty.
“In this edition, the total number of documented incidents in this report increased by over 15 percent over the past year and now includes more than 1,400 religious liberty incidents,” the report states.
In 2011, the group reported that there were 600 cases of attacks on religious liberty.
“It’s school cases, it’s military cases, it’s open public places cases, employment cases. Unfortunately, it is not [just] one particular area [of society], it’s across the board. What we collect is just what’s published. So really it is just the tip of the iceberg because what’s published is really a fraction of what is actually happening,” First Liberty CEO and Chief Counsel Kelly Shackelford said.
